Delaware is well-known as the “Corporate Capital of the World” for its encouraging business climate. “But we want to make sure the foreign companies know that we are far more than this,” Stone says. Looking ahead she recommends several strategies for the First State’s businesses to move forward in not only benefitting from the current spotlight but working to build upon Delaware’s foundation of achievements: -We can build on our state’s history. Research, manufacturing and agricultural giants such as DuPont, Gore, and Perdue established a legacy that other companies can build on; companies from around the world have found a nurturing environment and have established research labs and start-ups in biopharmaceuticals, advanced manufacturing, IT, agriculture, healthcare, and Fintech. Anchored by our state’s academic institutions and technical organizations, the state is fast becoming an Innovation Corridor second to none and needs to promote that. -Our strategic location means that we are far more than the North American gateway for imports of fresh fruits and juice concentrate. Not just the first port on the Delaware River, we also are the busiest. The Port offers international companies overnight access to 200 million North American consumers with faster speed to market. Companies located in Delaware can get their goods faster to US customers and to the Port of Wilmington for export. Cold chain pioneer and industry leader Burris Logistics was established in Delaware in 1925. It is no wonder that Amazon established its first operation outside of Washington State in Delaware and continues to expand. International companies are well-served by numerous repackaging, reshipping, warehousing, and trucking companies that offer assistance to businesses seeking to export, or import components, manufacture, and reexport finished goods overseas. -We can continue to collaborate among our private, government and public sectors to create long-term answers to some of the world’s most difficult problems. Working together, we have developed distinctly Delaware solutions that serve as an example for other countries. Government, industrial, and academic representatives from all over the world have traveled to our state to learn how we have successfully solved some of the world’s greatest challenges such as avian influenza and other zoonotic diseases, telemedicine implementation, environmental improvement, and the use of IT to improve legal and financial services. ________________________________________________________________________ World Trade Center ® Delaware is the State’s premier international business resource.
