Dr. Debbie Harrington Media Contact: Carla Stone [email protected] 302-656-7905 November 2, 2020, New Castle, DE The Delaware Africa Caribbean Coalition (DACC) hosted a Virtual Town Hall on Saturday, October 31st on Commerce and Trade between the State of Delaware and African countries. The WTC Delaware President joined Congresswoman Lisa Blunt-Rochester and Delaware State Representative Dr. Debbie Harrington to address opportunities for trade between Delaware and Africa and the role of the World Trade Center Delaware and the federal and state governments in promoting economic advancement. In a discussion moderated by Dr. Eunice Gwanmesia, Ms. Stone emphasized that Delaware is in an excellent position to increase two way trade with the African continent as the state is home to thriving agricultural, environmental, and healthcare industries, excellent logistics capabilities, especially the Port of Wilmington, and outstanding academic and institutions with a history of international education and exchange, areas of special interest to African countries. “The key to developing trade between Delaware and any one of the 54 countries in Africa,“ she said, “will be for companies and academic institutions to have local, in-country partners who can assist them to both market or purchase products or services. For trade to flourish, it must be a true two-way partnership with benefits for both Africa and Delaware." The World Trade Center Delaware, and its 325 World Trade Centers Association partners, including one in Africa, can provide services leading to opportunities for companies, NGOs, and academic institutions to expand their relationship with the countries of Africa. Since inception, the vision has materialized to be shared by so many members of Africa in Diaspora. Our first step towards achieving our goal involved collaborating with the state government to establish a commission for effective collaboration. The commission was created in April 2017 with the following mandates that form the core of our mission: Provide the Governor, members of the General Assembly, and policymakers with recommendations required to promote the welfare and interests of all people of African descent who reside in the State To work with various governmental agencies, business communities, and nonprofit organizations to meet the needs of people of Africa descent, including seeking funding from foundations and other sources to promote workforce and economic development of the community To provide a platform for the promotion of the cultural and historical heritage of any people of African descent To facilitate the socioeconomic relationship between the African and Caribbean countries, citizens, and residents, and this State.
